A selective inhibitor of types 1 and 2 isoforms of steroid 5 alpha-reductase, Avodart can be used as a monotherapy treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and in combination with alpha adrenergic antagonists.

In combination with an alpha adrenergic antagonist (usually tamsulosin), Avodart is used to treat BPH symptoms.
The medicine is not used in men for the prevention of prostate cancer.
This drug prevents the conversion of testosterone to DHT (dihydrotestosterone) in the human’s body.
Be sure to read the drug guide or patient instructions provided with each of your drugs. Avodart is sometimes given with another drugs called Flomax (tamsulosin).
The patient may use it to treat BPH (benign prostatic hyperplasia) in patients (men) with an enlarged prostate. Avodart helps reduce your need for prostate surgery later on and improve urinary flow.
This drug may use only men.
AVODART is for adult men only. Children/women/teenagers should not take this drug. All doctors don’t recommend touch this drug to women, because they have risk of a specific birth defect. If a woman touches AVODART capsules, she should wash the contact area immediately with water and soap.
The patient shouldn’t donate blood for six months after he has stopped this drug or while taking it. Because pregnant women may get your blood.

• for treating tuberculosis (isoniazid);
• an antidepressant : nefazodone;
• HIV/AIDS medicine;
• heart or blood pressure medication: quinidine (Quin-G) or nicardipine (Cardene); or

• imatinib (Gleevec).
Effect of dutasteride in a daily dose of 500 mg on the characteristics of sperm has been studied in healthy volunteers aged 18-52 years. For the 52-week treatment average percentage of reduction in the total sperm count, semen volume and sperm physical activity were 23%, 26% and 18%, respectively, compared to the baseline. Sperm concentration and their morphological characteristics were unchanged.
But only 30% reduction is considered clinically significant, so the clinical significance of effects of dutasteride on individual fertility is unknown.
Dutasteride is contraindicated for women. It is absorbed through the skin, so women and children should avoid contact with damaged capsules. In case of contact with damaged capsules they should immediately wash the appropriate skin with soap and water.
- Hypersensitivity to dutasteride and other ingredients;
- Hypersensitivity to other 5α-reductase inhibitors.
- Avodart is contraindicated for women and children.
In case of overdose (receiving doses 80 times higher than therapeutic) side effects were noted.
Avodart has no specific antidote, so if you suspect an overdose you need symptomatic and quite supportive care.
The most common symptom of BPH is difficulty urinating. Other signs and symptoms include:
- Need to urinate often
- Sensation of incomplete emptying of the bladder
- Delay or hesitation when you start to urinate
- Frequent interruption of urination
- Need to force the beginning of urination
- Low urine output
Urinary symptoms such as those described above are often signs of BPH, but also other diseases. This is why it is important to consult a physician, who can perform simple tests to assess symptoms and eliminate other possible problems, including prostatitis (inflammation) or prostate cancer.
Dutasteride monotherapy: impotence, the change (decrease) in libido, ejaculation disorder, gynecomastia (includes tenderness and breast enlargement).
Combination therapy with dutasteride and tamsulosin: impotence, the change (decrease) in libido, ejaculation disorder, gynecomastia (includes tenderness and breast enlargement), dizziness.
Very rare: allergic reactions (rash, itching, hives, limited swelling, angioneurotic edema).
Please read and be careful !
Conditions and period of storage: The drug should be stored out of reach of children at temperature not exceeding 30 ° C. Shelf life – 4 years.
Treatment and prevention of the progression of benign prostatic hyperplasia (to reduce the size of the prostate, relieve symptoms, improve urination and reduce the risk of acute urinary retention and the need for surgical treatment). The drug inhibits the activity of isozymes 5α-reductase types 1 and 2, which are responsible for the conversion of testosterone to 5α-dihydrotestosterone. Avodart in combination with the alpha adrenergic antagonist, tamsulosin, is indicated for the treatment of symptomatic BPH in men with an enlarged prostate.
Dosage and administration
Dutasteride can be used as a single agent and in combination with alpha 1-adrenergic antagonist.
Avodart can be taken with or without food.
The drug takes effect quickly, but treatment should be continued for at least 6 months to evaluate objectively the effect of the drug.
For adult men, including elderly patients, the recommended dose oral is 500 mg (1 capsule). 1 time / day. The capsules should be swallowed whole, do not chew or open, as the contents of the capsules can cause irritation of the oropharynx.

For patients with renal impairment the adjustment of the dose is not required.
The patients with impaired liver function should be used the drug with caution, as dutasteride is subjected to intensive metabolism in the liver.
